1 John 4:9-12 (NLT)  God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him.  This is real love–not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.  Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.  No one has ever seen God.  But if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us.

Observation

Apparently, it is all about love – loving others more than ourselves, loving in the face of rejection, loving those who have not earned it, loving those who don’t understand the immensity and true cost of the sacrifice – in other words, the same love demonstrated by Jesus for us on the Cross.  This kind of love is not humanly possible because our emotions, survival instincts, egos, prejudices and self-interests get in the  way.  We count the cost to ourselves incorrectly – by human standards, not God’s, by selfish interests not selfless ones, by short term gains not eternal ones.  It is our nature UNTIL we surrender body and soul completely to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to mold, shape and change us into that nature of Christ in us.

We can also forget that we did not deserve the grace that God’s Love made available to us.  We must be careful to remember that each soul is God’s creation and has value in His sight.  When we begin to judge whether another has value according to our standards (“good enough”) – has done no evil, is productive in our society. living within the rules, working hard, or progressing quickly enough along our timeline, our checklist, our standards of achievement – we have lost God’s perspective.  God so loved the world that He made grace, redemption, restoration, healing, and love FREELY available to all of us who did not deserve it – the just and the unjust, the kind and the cruel, the lovely and the unlovely, the able and the disabled.

Impact on Me

The culture in which I was raised makes this a paradigm shift for me – from performance-based to grace-based.  Fame, position, power and wealth are all considered evidence in this world of worth, being productive members of society.  However, Heaven judges differently.  Heaven measures me by how I love Him by loving others, by how fully I allow His love to be expressed in and through me, by what I am willing to sacrifice for the sake of another.  “No one has ever seen God.  But if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us.”  Will I be held responsible for how I use the gifts He has given me to express His love in the world?  Certainly, but Jesus is the only judge of how well my gifts have been used.

“Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.”  So, just how far does this go?  I am reminded that Jesus died for the man who drove the nails in His hands, the man who held the whip, those who yelled, “Crucify.”  I am reminded that The Shepherd left the 99 to go find the 1.  I am reminded that Jesus said we need to be like little children.  I am reminded that Jesus was born in a manger, worked as a carpenter and chose fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot – all common men – to walk with Him as disciples.  Am I truly willing to trust that obeying His command to love even my enemies will benefit His kingdom?  Am I willing to bear shame and sorrow for another’s sake?  Am I truly willing to put myself in God’s hands and let Him choose? 

Prayer

Father God, My Maker, My Savior, All-Wise God, I profess that I want to be more like Jesus, but do I draw lines that I will not cross, have prices I am not willing to pay?  I don’t want to do so! I want to place myself in Your hands as an instrument, on Your altar as a sacrifice, without restrictions.  I pray that You will lead, encourage and guide me to faithfully walk in those footsteps You have set out before me.  May I be like Jesus Who had no desire to set His own course but only follow Yours.  I seek only to please You.  Make it so, in Jesus’ name.

Numbers 24:3-9 (NLT) “This is the message of Balaam son of Beor,the message of the man whose eyes see clearly, ⁴ the message of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open: ⁵ How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob; how lovely are your homes, O Israel!  ⁶ They spread before me like palm groves, like gardens by the riverside.  They are like tall trees planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters.  ⁷ Water will flow from their buckets;  their offspring have all they need.  Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted.  ⁸ God brought them out of Egypt; for them he is as strong as a wild ox.  He devours all the nations that oppose him, breaking their bones in pieces, shooting them with arrows.  ⁹ Like a lion, Israel crouches and lies down;  like a lioness, who dares to arouse her?  Blessed is everyone who blesses you, O Israel, and cursed is everyone who curses you.”

OBSERVATION
These are God’s dreams, what He desires to do, for His people.  He wants to lavish prosperity, peace and grace upon them – blessing upon blessing on His beloved.  I can imagine God closing His eyes and envisioning all of His dreams coming to pass – His people returning love for love, trust for trust, grace for grace – giving everything in return for the all He provides – embracing Him as Father, Protector, Redeemer, Beloved.  How His heart must yearn for this!

Sadly, what He dreams for us is rarely what we allow Him to deliver.  He asks us to trust Him absolutely, but His people (we) are inconsistent in our response, sometimes obedient, trusting, listening, wanting only to please Him and sometimes wandering hearts, easily distracted, making our own rules, choosing our own ways, gratifying our own pleasures at the expense of wounding Him.  So, because His patient endurance and mercy far surpasses mine (or, be honest, yours) He made provisions for redemption, repentance, restoration, but knowing that He is slow to anger and full of mercy, we play the odds as we gamble with the temptations that become transgressions that become barriers that we find it difficult or impossible to overcome on our own.  Still, He reaches His hand over the barriers and beckons us to let Him rescue, restore and fulfill His dream for us – because He is not willing to let His dreams die.

IMPACT ON ME

Who is this God that has such vast oceans of love, loving kindness as a flood, grace and peace like mighty rivers, Who would give His own Son so that He can reach over the barriers we ourselves constructed in order to draw us into His dream for us?  He is the One Who calls us His beloved, even though we stand soul-naked without excuse and our hands empty before Him.

I did not understand that a personal relationship with Jesus was possible until I was 32.  I had grown up in a church that taught me faithfulness, humility, reverence for God and spiritual authority, but God Himself was distant and stern.  I had tasted the world and its pain enough to recognize what a glorious gift salvation is and marveled at the new understanding of the kind of relationship God desired with me (us).  I have never looked back.  I want to be an instrument in bringing God’s dreams for me and others to reality – on earth as it is in Heaven. 

PRAYER

Holy God, Creator, Redeemer, Advocate, All-Powerful Lord, I want to enter into your dreams for me and help others to do the same.  By Your Holy Spirit, let me be one “whose eyes see clearly, …one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open” so I may walk only in Your ways, serve faithfully and continuously bring joy to Your heart.  Truly may we see it be on earth as it is in Heaven. In Jesus’ name, make it so.

Jeremiah  23:4 NLT  Then I will appoint responsible shepherds who will care for them, and they will never be afraid again. Not a single one will be lost or missing.  I, the Lord have spoken! 

John 10:14-18 MSG  “I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. In the same way, the Father knows me and I know the Father. I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary. You need to know that I have other sheep in addition to those in this pen. I need to gather and bring them, too. They’ll also recognize my voice. Then it will be one flock, one Shepherd. This is why the Father loves me: because I freely lay down my life. And so I am free to take it up again. No one takes it from me. I lay it down of my own free will. I have the right to lay it down; I also have the right to take it up again. I received this authority personally from my Father.”

John 19.10, 11a  JBPhillips  But Jesus gave him no reply.  So Pilate said to Him, “Won’t you speak to me?  Don’t You realise that I have the power to set You free, and I have the power to have You crucified?”  “You have no power at all against Me,” replied Jesus, “except what was given to you from above.”  –

OBSERVATION

Jesus is our perfect example of the responsible shepherd promised in Jeremiah.  He shepherds so closely and intimately that His sheep respond to His voice.  He watches so carefully that none are lost and He is even willing to sacrifice Himself for His sheep.  He understands and embraces His assignment – to lay down His life – so every sheep has the choice to submit to and follow this Shepherd.  Jesus fully understands where all power and authority originates and stands firm in the face of what men can do to Him – again, for the sake of His sheep.  He will never abandon the best interest of His sheep for His own benefit.  No shortcuts, no compromises, no distractions.  Not one is lost of the flock because this Shepherd is willing to give it all for each and every one.

IMPACT ON ME

First, am I a sheep who knows my Shepherd’s voice, staying close by Him, submitted and obedient?  This is the way I learn to shepherd those in my care.  So, am I diligent, self-sacrificing, caring, concerned, watchful enough to be judged a responsible shepherd?  Have I listened and learned from Jesus how to love and care for my sheep?  I need to be careful here to avoid becoming a Pharisee in judging myself or others in this regard.  I joke that I am a recovering over-achieving perfectionist, but, as both shepherd and sheep, I need to examine the standards and goals I set to ensure that they are set by God and not by me for the wrong reasons.

Jesus bore the pain, humiliation and shame of the Cross for the sake of His sheep, regardless of what people would think.  Am I willing to be misunderstood, shamed and humiliated, if that is what Jesus asks of me for the sake of my sheep?  Tough question…How much do appearances and the recognition of others matter to me?  Am I fully surrendered and committed to walking out God’s will and purpose for my life if the cost is great?  I truly want the answer to be YES and remain YES after I find out the cost.

PRAYER

Father in Heaven, Creator, Redeemer, Lord of all, You are perfect in loving and caring for each of us.  Keep me aware of my role as both sheep and shepherd.  Help me to listen closely, hear clearly, learn well and obey quickly.  May I always seek Your plan for me and allow You to be the judge of how well I serve.  I want to be both a sheep that stays close to You and a responsible, good shepherd who loses not one.  Mold me, make me, use me as You see fit.  In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Ephesians  6:10-18  (Phillips)  – In conclusion be strong – not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of His boundless resource.  Put on God’s complete armor so that you can successfully resist all the devil’s methods of attack.  For our fight is not against any physical enemy:  it is against organizations and powers that are spiritual.  We are up against the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil. Therefore you must wear the whole armor of God that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground.  Take your stand then with truth as your belt, righteousness your breastplate, the Gospel of peace firmly on your feet, salvation as your helmet and in your hand the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Above all be sure you take faith as your shield, for it can quench every burning missile the enemy hurls at you.  Pray at all times with every kind of spiritual prayer, keeping alert and persistent as you pray for all Christ’s men and women.

Observation

Ephesians is a book about our standing in Christ and God’s purpose to equip, empower and mature us to enforce Christ’s victory on the Cross.  We are called to partner with Him, as a warrior equipped with “His boundless resource,” to enforce the victory won on the Cross so all things can be on earth as it is in Heaven.  “Therefore you must wear the whole armor of God that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground.”  Remember, as long as our standing is in Christ, He (and we) will not retreat or be defeated.  The victory in this battle is not dependent on our own strengths and abilities but rather on knowing in whom we stand.  He is asking for our faith to trust Him plus our willingness and commitment to submit all we have received from Him to Him. 

“For our fight is not against any physical enemy” and so the battle plan is also different.  God’s armor and weapons above are laughable for the physical battlefield but devastating to the enemy on the spiritual front.  These are some of the weapons against which our Enemy has no defense – salvation, truth, righteousness, peace, faith, the Word.  Mercy, grace, love, forgiveness are some others.  If we refuse to be offended and pray for and forgive our enemies, what defense does the devil have against that?  None!  He has been disarmed.  AND we open a door for those we thought were enemies to find freedom and deliverance from the Enemy’s captivity. The Holy Spirit will teach us the art of this warfare if we allow.

Impact on Me

I love reading the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5-7) because it helps me to see what operating on earth using spiritual weapons looks like. These verses are in red in my Bible, therefore, they are the commands and teachings of Jesus.  I want to listen closely and take Him seriously.  To do otherwise would be a mistake and handicap in my understanding of spiritual warfare.  As difficult as some of these teachings are to embrace (mostly requiring reining in my pride), all things are possible with God and, therefore, all He says to do is possible in Him.  I have found that the first steps are to lay down my pride, my need to be seen as right, my need for the praise of people around me.

“Pray at all times with every kind of spiritual prayer, keeping alert and persistent as you pray for all Christ’s men and women.”  Much spiritual warfare happens through prayer, and it is essential.  Prayer helps to remind me that it is not people or organizations or government that is my true enemy, but the “the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil”. 

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are our Great Commander, the mightiest of Warriors.  Empower me by Your Holy Spirit as I bow my heart and life to You.  Search me and try me until Your armor is my 24/7 garment, keeping me always on the ready to respond to the tactics and attacks of the Enemy.  Give me wisdom, knowledge and insight to see past the person into their woundedness so my warfare brings not only victory for You and me but also for those who are held captive and deceived by the Enemy.  Make it so, in Jesus’ name.

Isaiah 42:1-4 MSG Take a good look at my servant. I’m backing Him to the hilt. He’s the one I chose, and I couldn’t be more pleased with Him. I’ve bathed Him with my Spirit, my life. He’ll set everything right among the nations. He won’t call attention to what He does with loud speeches or gaudy parades. He won’t brush aside the bruised and the hurt and He won’t disregard the small and insignificant, but He’ll steadily and firmly set things right. He won’t tire out and quit. He won’t be stopped until He’s finished his work—to set things right on earth. Far-flung ocean islands wait expectantly for His teaching.

Luke 6:31-36 NIV 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Observation

[From the World Vision website re: Social Justice]. “Biblical references to the word “justice” mean “to make right.” Justice is, first and foremost, a relational term — people living in right relationship with God, one another, and the natural creation. From a scriptural point of view, justice means loving our neighbor as we love ourselves and is rooted in the character and nature of God. As God is just and loving, so we are called to do justice and live in love.”

Isaiah spoke his words during a very corrupt period before the Assyrian Captivity of Israel. He cried out against how despicably pagan his society had become – idolatrous, immoral, unjust, selfish, heartless.  The passage above is the first of his Servant songs, predicting the hope of Messiah Who would set things right again (establish justice), teaching us how to live peacefully and righteously.

So, we fast forward to Jesus, the Christ, the promised Messiah, Who will “steadily and firmly set things right” by His teaching.  These words of Jesus were easier to hear than to trust in and choose to live; they are ones that either arrest us or we choose to ignore as we pass by to more palatable, less life-changing teaching.  Jesus said we are either for Him or against Him. Setting things right requires identifying the true evil enemy, Satan, and joining Jesus in rescuing souls from his grasp by reconciling the deceived, wounded, disenfranchised, hateful and angry into the love and fellowship of Christ. This is impossible in our own strength and ability, so it requires that we surrender our pride, comfort, security and prejudices to allow the Holy Spirit to change us into the people God planned for us to be.  With God all things are possible. Jesus is asking us here to make a choice to allow the Holy Spirit to use us as instruments of this reconciliation; it is up to us to choose whether we are instruments of justice and reconciliation in Jesus’ hand or injustice and chaos in the hands of Satan. There is no other choice.  By praying for our enemies, we open a door for the Holy Spirit to begin the rescue and reconciliation.  In choosing to do this, Jesus says, “you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.  Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Impact on Me

 Injustice is universal, endemic, a global pandemic of its own.  Our true enemy works to spread his chaos through hate, disease, greed and all the other tools sin provides to separate us from each other and God. I grieve over everyone who is murdered – whether by one’s own hand or another’s. I grieve over everyone who loses life to illness – physical or mental. I grieve over those who suffer poverty – whether of body, soul or spirit.  Each of us does what we humanly can to relieve the suffering, to comfort those who mourn, to provide for the needs, but what is humanly possible is not sufficient because it impacts only the symptoms and not the cause.  My anger at the injustice of lives lost too soon or lives held captive by sin needs to be directed at the true enemy if I want to kill the root of the injustice. Whether I join a peaceful protest or act individually, to be a child of the Most High, I must have a heart of mercy and grace toward the ungrateful and wicked who are used by Satan because they are captive to sin.

Prayer

Father God, You are Almighty God, Merciful and Just, Everlasting. I stand before You in Christ. Isaiah cried out to warn Your people, then and now, of the consequences of ignoring Your Word.  I want to be one who not only listens but also obeys. Give me the courage to allow Your Holy Spirit to encourage, equip and strengthen me to embrace Your hard, humanly impossible challenges by faith because I know that will allow Jesus to set things right, in me and those who will be impacted by the evidences of my obedience. Lord, fill me with hope that what seems like an overwhelming sea of injustice is being replaced by the living water that brings true justice. I place myself in Your hands. Make me an instrument of justice, mercy and peace. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
